The Scarlet Letter Ch. 1-8 Summaries

The Custom House:
This introductory basically provides a frame for the Scarlet Letter itself. Its narrator is unknown, provided he recalls his life and how he came about to find the cherry letter. He worked as the chief executive officer at Salems custom house. He is uninterested in his job; he prefers writing and literature. One day though, he discovers some documents covered in an A, he reads it. A new president is elected and the narrator loses his job at the custom house, henceforth, he starts writing his romance, which becomes the base of the Scarlet Letter.

Chapter 1 The Prison Door
The commencement of this chapter basically tells the endorser about the mien of the jail and the inhabitants. Hawthorne describes them as bearded men in sad-colored garments, and intelligibly states that these men, as well as wondering women, were gathered alfresco a wooden edifice. The author has also brought to the readers attention the fact that their earliest practical necessities were to depute a cemetery and prison (this is ironic since they thought of themselves as the most perfect human beings).
