Hardboiled Crime Fiction/Hitchcock Techniques

In my frames the meaning, purpose and relevance of the Hardboiled sub literary genre and Hitchcocks techniques are exposed. I am looking into the interpretation of texts and literary devices and highlighting through my frames why certain interpretations of meanings can be drawn. I will look at how Hitchcocks technique in rear window represents an evolution in toughened and film noir.

It is important to my frames to note that the pugnacious sub genre originated within America as a response to the cutting realities brought about by the First World War.
Later hardboilds importance as a Sub Genre was reinforce by the prohibition era and rise of gangsters as swellspring as the Depression. It was a clear rejection of the conventions of previous sub genres of curse fiction especially the Golden Age. Previous Genres were labelled as too contrived, and too little aware of what goes on in the world by Raymond Chandler one of the founding fathers of the hard-boiled civilize of detective fiction.

Hard-boiled crime stories inevitably made it to the smooth-spoken screen. Quite a few stand out as defining and classic texts of the genre. Films like The Maltese Falcon and The man-sized Sleep incorporated Film noir. Film noir came into its own in a shocked and recovering post-war America.



Hollywood began using it for gangster films and murder thrillers, often directed by talents like the German import, Fritz Lang and ultimately by Hitchcock who was so assured in his collar of noir that he could bend genre and re-examine its rules through highly organized sets, use of popular hero and everyman stars as well as Technicolor processing.
It was also about this time that the technology of cinema was rapidly expanding to introduce wide screens and wide angle lenses, increase depth of field and film stocks that could play with darker shadows, silhouettes and brighter lights, especially in the studio context.
