Body Rituals among the Nacirema
For many years, the States has fallen into ethnocentrism, believing that it is their farming that is superior to others and has judged foreign behaviors by the standards of their own. When reading Horace mineworkers Body Rituals Among the Nacirema the reader is drive to look upon the Naciremas particular behaviors as bizarre and unacceptable. throughout the article the Nacirema is described as a culture that goes to intense lengths to perform seemingly ridiculous rituals in order to be content with their self-image and perspective of themselves. What the reader does not realize is that Miner was drawing the parallels of this mythical society to the reality of Americans discontentment with their strong-arm port, dependency on modern medicine and willingness to undergo conscientious procedures to be reliable by the society that they comprise.
Miner describes the Nacirema as a culture that undermines the body and looks at it as a weak and fated creation. He states that the Nacirema believe that their body is suffering and its natural tendency is to debilitate and be stricken with disease. That is wherefore the Nacirema has rooted in their values a deep need to modify their appearance in order to be accepted into their society.



Miner goes as far to say, that physical appearance is so important to them that the places of pampering are called shrines and that these shrines are devoted to the point of averting negative characteristics of the human body. Miner makes it clear that appearance is so essential to the Nacirema that, without their charms and magical potions they could not live. The Nacirema are go along to be described as a strange culture and their rituals of passing blades through the mans face, inserting womens heads into ovens and applying hog hair into the mouth are nothing but formula to them and obviously bizarre to the reader.
