The Crow were part of another tribe, the Hidatsa. According to Ruth Hagman, In the recent fifteen-hundreds, the Crow broke away from the Hidatsa, who were farmers (5). Hagman also adds that The Crow became buffalo, or bison, hunters. They followed the buffalo herds (6). This is somewhat ironic due to the fact that the Hidatsa had do a transition from being nomads to living [and farming] in unmatched area (Doherty 4). The first recorded Crow meeting with a white person, in the words of Frederick Hoxie, occurred On June 25, 1805, at intimately one oclock in the afternoon a witness to the scene was a young French-Canadian adventurer named Francois Antoine Larocque (33). Larocque gave the Crow gifts in order to encourage good friendship amidst him and his would-be trading partners.
Hoxie lists the gifts as being four axes, octad ivory combs, ten seashells, eight steels and flints (implements for starting fires), smoking tobacco, beads, dick feathers, twenty-eight knives, red paint, ninety-six rings, forty-eight steel awls (tools for making holes in leather), several pieces of glass, one thousand musket balls, and musket powder (50). respect that the last two items in the list are ammunition and powder for firearms. Also notice that actual muskets were not in the list. From this we can infer that somehow the Crow had already obtained guns. This would slopped that the Crow had already known of the existence of white mint and had gotten muskets from some of them. They also had gotten horses from the Shoshone.
