Oxford advanced dictionary define line upity as a deportment or action that follows the accepted rules of the society. It is defined by David Myers (1999) as a change in behaviour or belief as a result of substantial or imagined group pressure.
Because conformity is very important in the society many researchers argon interested in the form to which people conform or rebel against social norms.
Researchers care Asch, Sherif and Zimbardo all gave their explanation as to why people conform from different perspectives and from their studies we can deduce why and when people conform, factors bear on conformity and how conformity affects the society.

Muzafer Sherif (1935) investigated the emergence of group norms using motorcar kinetic effect. Auto kinetic effect is an optical put-on felt when a person is placed in a totally dark room where stationary point of swinging appears to move .Sherif well-tried participants individually to judge how far the joyous appears to move and then in groups of three.

Sherif discovered that when people are faced with ambiguous(uncertain) situation people often look to others in a group for guidance .
This type of conformity is cognize as informational conformity.

Asch (1955) on the other hand questioned Sherifs study, he said participants may have conformed due to ambiguous stimulant given, and want to know if people will confer downstairs an unambiguous (uncertain) stimulus. In Aschs experiment, students were told they were taken part in a vision test.
