The Self

The concept of ego is genius of complexity. Although we spend years with our egotism, it can take quite some time for one to soundy and develop that self. The sociologist in this section provide ludicrous understanding of the concepts and shine light on how people play to look at themselves as well as what that kernel to others. And likely most important to the sociologist, how does the way one notions their self effect society as a whole. They focus on how the concept of self changes or bothday interactions and shape our neighborly experience.
In The Looking-Glass Self, Charles Horton Cooley presents the idea that we shape our self fit by looking through the eyes of other people. some other important idea of his was the primary group which influences that self view the most. Probably the most simple example that combine the deuce idea is the family unit. For instance, my family sees me as an excellent student so I take the necessary steps to fulfill that image. Or when acquiring dressed for a night on the town, I may look in the mirror and think will a guy think that I am attractive in this outfit? We look in the mirror and think closely what others will think when they see me act this way or that.




I think this idea is quite interesting because it is our every day interactions and how people react to them that ultimately shapes our self presentation. If I am out with a new friend in a shopping mall and I shoplift scarce my new friend is disapproves, then I will probably not shoplift anymore to gain her approval or separate our friendship because she does not reflect a self that I like I might like to see. Whether it be good or bad, we take the thoughts of other people into contemplation from something as small as how we look in the morning to as big as major life decisions and characteristics. forward reading the Cooley piece, I never really noticed dear how important the looking-glass self is to the development of self.
