Dickinson shows how reputation cannot be tamed. Even a little bird will not feed from her hand. At first she looks on as an observer. She approaches disposition with the stereotypical superiority, she looks down and watches it eat a worm crude(a). Then she personifies the bird as a gentleman hopped crabwise for the beetle to pass. Yet the bird chooses to escape. By having the bird turn tail rather than take the crumb, Dickinson mocks the ignorance of mans views of nature, as nature itself flees the tainted touch of mankind. The bird leaves and returns to a graceful, dignified melodic line which is its home. In the last stanzas the bird transforms into a magnificent chain reactor of grace, the tone follows the flow from humdrum dullness to a adduce of almost eerie awe.
